The Dallas Mavericks‘ latest team acquisition is definitely causing a buzz here in the Big D and around the country. Deandre Jordan spent the last seven seasons making a big name for himself in Los Angeles and his move to the Mavs is considered to be a massive blow to the Clippers according to experts. Jordan is widely credited with helping the Clippers reach the second round of the playoffs in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
So just who is this newbie who soon will be donning our beloved Mavs’ jersey? A couple of fun facts about DAJ:
Texas Represent: Hyland Deandre Jordan was born in Houston, Texas on July 21, 1988. He attended Episcopal High School through his junior year and transferred to Christian Life Center Academy for his senior year. He was a third-team Parade All-American, named to the first-team All-Greater Houston squad by the Houston Chronicle and was a two-time all-state selection. At Christian Life Center, Jordan posted a career high of 37 points in a game and also set the school record for most blocks in a game with 20.
Coming out of high school, Jordan was rated as the number 8 overall prospect, the number 2 center inthe country and the number 1-ranked prep player in Texas by Rivals.com.
A Different Kind of Fun: While some players enjoy shoe shopping, painting, fashion and every other hobby out there, DAJ keeps it simple: video games and gum. His favorite is 5 Gum. When the company heard about his obsession, they did what any smart brand would do – built Deandre his own custom 5 Gum chair to play video games in, naturally.
Jordan is Proudly Christian: DAJ credits much of his success to his faith as evident by a myriad of tattoos that include Matthew 5:4-5 on his chest,a Christian cross on his left arm, the Serenity Prayer and his own message “I thank God for the gift that he has given me. I will honor, sacrifice, and dedicate myself to my talent. I know where I have come from but I know where I am going” on his right arm and Philippians 4:13 with praying hands and “G.W.O.M” (God Watch Over Me) on his stomach.
A love of Tupac: In an interview earlier this year after a monster performance against the Celtics, DAJ got distracted during an interview when he heard the eponymous rapper playing.
Dear Mama: He agreed to sign a four-year, $80 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks on July 3, 2015. The biggest influence on Jordan’s decision to come to the Mavs? His mother, Kimberly Jordan, who reportedly wanted her baby closer to home.
