Let us be the first to share the best kept secret in North Texas – the WNBA Dallas Wings, who are tipping off their second season on Saturday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at College Park Center against the Minnesota Lynx. The team has been busy expanding their ever growing legion of fans during the offseason after adding five draft picks in this year’s WNBA Draft, including two players who won the Women’s NCAA national championship in Dallas.
The Wings went into the draft with an impressive five picks and selected No. 3 pick Evelyn Ahkator (Kentucky), teammates and 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball champions Allisha Gray and Kaela Davis (selected at No. 4 and 10, respectively, South Carolina) in the first round. Breanna Lewis (No. 23, Kansas State) and Saniya Chong (No. 26, UCONN) round out the rookie class.
So far, the rookies are showing their readiness for the professional stage in pre-season play, with Allisha Gray contributing 15 points and going 8-for-8 behind the line against the San Antonio Stars and Kaela Davis recording 14 points against the Indiana Fever. As a team, the rookies are meshing well with the returning players Skylar Diggins-Smith, Theresa Plaisance, Courtney Paris, Karima Christmas-Kelly, Aerial Powers and Glory Johnson. The Wings started the season on the road May 14 with a win against the Phoenix Mercury, 68-58. With this much talent on the court, we are expecting a winning season for the Wings.
